Trap shoots may be informal practice events or "Registered Shoots". To shoot registered targets, you must be a member of the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) - www.shootata.com. The cost is $18.00 for annual membership and $500.00 for life membership. Sub-Junior (less than 15yrs old) and Junior (15yrs to less than 18yrs of age) annual dues are $9. The membership year runs September 1 through August 31.

In registered trap, your targets are all recorded by the ATA, and you will be placed in different classifications, according to your previous scores. As a new shooter expect to be initially placed in the B class. Your classification will later be determined by the percentage of targets you break out of your first 500 registered targets. See Table 1 for a breakdown of ATA trap classifications.

In the handicap events new male shooters are placed on the 20 yard line and new female and sub junior shooters are placed on the 19 yard line. As your scores in registered handicap events improve you will be assigned to a longer yard line up to a maximum of 27 yards.

How to enter a registered trap shoot.
First you need to find a club that hold registered events. You can find a listing of clubs and shoot dates at the ATA web site - www.shootata.com. Also check our club's event listing by clicking on Shoots to the left. Call the club or visit its web site to read the event program. When you show up at the event you need to go to the cashier and join the ATA if you are not already a member. Your targets at this event will then be registered with the ATA. Next you need to pick your squad and the post that you wish to start at (1, 2, 3, 4, or 5). Avoid starting at Post 1 for your first few shoots. Post 1 is considered the Squad leader and should be reserved for a seasoned competitor. The cashier will help you with the entry procedure. Entry fees for each event run between $15 and $25 with a $2.00 ATA day fee.
